James John Bailey was the first athlete to run a sub-4 minute mile on U.S. soil on 6 May 1956 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as part of a star-studded promotional race ahead of the Melbourne Olympic Games. The race had been staged for John Landy to attempt the feat, and he did did also finish under four minutes but was second to Bailey's six-second personal best of 3:58.6.
