TasmaniaBill Barwick was the first Tasmanian athlete to represent Australia at an Olympic Games. He was a champion middle-distance runner who held every Tasmanian distance record from 800 Yards to 15 Miles in 1933.
Barwick was struck by an Achilles tendon injury after arriving in Los Angeles for the 1932 Olympic Games. With a few days rehabitation & training he finished a creditable 7th in his 1500m Heat.
After the Olympics Barwick continued competing as a specialist miler before retiring from track competition in 1935. He was awarded an MBE in 1985 for his contribution to the community as an athletic administrator.
