New South WalesAlbie Thomas is a former elite Australian middle distance runner who achieved great success in the late 1950s & early 1960s. On 6 Aug 1958 Thomas became only the 20th athlete in history to break the four minute mile while pacing Herb Elliott to a world record result in Santry, Ireland. He won 8 Australian Championships in one mile & three mile events; as well as 19 NSW Championships in events ranging from one mile to marathon.
Following his retirement from international competition Thomas continued to represent St George District Athletic Club for many decades as an athlete, coach & administrator. He was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia, Australian Sports Medal & Centenary Medal as well as being admitted to the NSW Government Hall of Champions. He holds a Merit Award & Life Membership of St George District Athletic Club.
